Hello! Welcome to my department webpage. I'm Dr. Venkatramani and I work in the broad areas of fluid-structure interactions, nonlinear dynamics, and vibration-based energy harvesting. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from SRM University, Chennai. Subsequently, I joined "The Uncertainty lab" in the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT-Madras as a project associate. I worked there on a sponsored project with Prof. Sayan Gupta (https://home.iitm.ac.in/sayan/). Later, in 2012, I joined the same lab for a direct Ph.D. with Prof. Sayan as an advisor and Prof Sunetra Sarkar (https://home.iitm.ac.in/sunetra/) from the Department of Aerospace Engineering as a co-advisor. I worked on broad aspects of aeroelasticity involving wind tunnel experiments, numerical simulations, use of nonlinear dynamics paradigms, and developed practicable outcomes using time series analysis.
I submitted my Ph.D. thesis (for the award of MS and Ph.D. - under the IIT-M direct Ph.D. scheme) in July 2017 and immediately joined SNU as an assistant professor - which I am till date. As an outcome of my publications and citations in this field, I serve as a reviewer for highly reputed journals, such as Journal of Fluids and Structures (JFS), Journal of Sound and Vibration (JSV), Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulations, Smart Materials and Structures, Nonlinear Dynamics etc (select journals only mentioned here).
My research interests are in the following broad areas. Vibrations and Nonlinear Dynamics, Aeroelasticity, and Energy Harvesting from Vibrating Structures. Recently, I have started working on human voice production from the purview of non-smooth nonlinear dynamical systems. More details pertaining to my work can be found in my Google Scholar page https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=s8reLtcAAAAJ&hl=en
Those interested in the above areas are encouraged to contact me or my students for further details.

I so far have taught both conventional and unconventional genres of courses. I, year after year, handle "mechanics of solids" in the monsoon semester for undergraduate students and is one of my highest rated courses. I offer "mechanical vibrations" as an undergraduate elective in spring semesters and is an equally well-rated course. I occasionally teach undergraduate core courses like Engineering Mechanics and Kinematics of Machinery as well.
For the graduate students, I have so far taught "research methodology", "Dynamics and Vibrations", "Advanced Machine Design: Theory of Elasticity", and "Fluid-Structure Interactions". I'll be offering "advanced mechanics of solids" (also called theory of elasticity) for graduate students from Monsoon semester, 2020 onwards.
Received Best paper award for presenting a paper on model free prediction of flutter instability in Structural Engineering Convention (SEC 2016) held in CSIR-SERC, Chennai.
Received start-up-research grant (SRG) from Govt. of India SERB scheme. The grant funds the experimental and theoretical aspects of my on-going research on aeroelasticity and nonlinear dynamics. Grant amount ~ Rs 19 Lacs
