Profile Summary 

Dr. Visakh Vaikuntanathan started working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Shiv Nadar University from December 2021. Prior to this, he worked as a post-doctoral research associate in the Institute of Aerospace Thermodynamics (ITLR) of the University of Stuttgart, where he was associated with two different projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG): one on Droplet Interaction Technologies (DROPIT) where he was in charge of a sub-project on ‘Development of novel optical techniques for micro-fluid dynamics’ (micro-PIV) from May 2017 till April 2019 in cooperation with the University of Bergamo in Italy, and the other (from May 2019 till November 2021) on ‘Investigation of droplet motion and grouping’ in cooperation with Technion and Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. Prior to his tenure at the University of Stuttgart, he worked as an institute (post-doctoral) Research Associate in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) on topics associated with the interaction of biofuel droplets with hot solid surfaces and interaction/evaporation of droplets on groove-textured surfaces.

Dr. Visakh obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, IISc in March 2016, working on experimental and theoretical studies on droplet impact on smooth and textured surfaces, which was awarded the best Ph.D. thesis in the department for the year 2015-16. He received his Master of Science (Engineering) degree from IISc in 2010-2011 and, prior to that, his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Calicut in 2007-08.

Teaching & Research Interests: 

My research interests are primarily in the area of multiphase flows, with specific focus on droplet systems encountered in liquid sprays. In this context, my research explores the fundamental aspects of droplet-solid, droplet-liquid, droplet-droplet, and droplet-gas interactions. The research is broadly aimed at providing a better understanding and support for the development of environment-friendly systems for a sustainable future.
